LOVING THE LAND,
FARMING IT WISELY
LA RIZZOLA is located in the countryside just outside Bologna, in the municipality of Calderara di Reno, along the road from which it took its name. For over 20 years, with its 30 hectares of land - about 10 of which occupied by vineyards - it has represented a significant point of reference for rural life in this area, being one of the first agricultural estates in Italy to have introduced methods of integrated pest management and sexual confusion. The choices of growing methods have never been particularly influenced by market values, but are rather geared toward optimizing the special characteristics of the soil that make it suitable for growing fruit trees and grapevines. So it is that from June to August, different varieties of apricots, plums and peaches are picked in succession and transformed into jams and fruit juice using natural methods or sold in the farm shop set up in a completely renovated late 19th-century barn, which also accommodates areas dedicated to the storage and sale of the wine produced by the estate.
